Warm Fire, Good Book

For the Love of It: The Mammoth Legacy of Roma & Dave McCoy Penniless, largely abandoned by his parents, Dave McCoy first strapped into a pair of self-made wooden skis in the early 1930s. While he showed early leanings toward becoming the ideal ski bum, a prowess for mechanics and critical thinking lured him into tinkering with rope tows and coaching ski racers. By the turn of the 21st century, he had built a world-renowned Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort and guided some 20 Mammoth ski racers to the Olympics. Written by Robin Morning, a ski-obsessed amateur ski historian who spent her racing years coached and inspired by McCoy, her book captures the charismatic story of Dave and his wife Roma’s love affair with California’s Eastern Sierra, of skiing, ski racing, and how the couple so deeply enhanced the alpine world around them.
More important than McCoy’s accomplishments were the methods he employed. Balancing strength and confidence with humility and kindness, he cared more about the happiness of people around him than about how much money he was making. His belief in the individual brought out the best in people and inspired team spirit.
In 2020 at the age of 104, Dave passed away. He is remembered for his athleticism, business skills, goodwill, philanthropy, and his signature question, “Did you have fun today?”

An Alpine Angel Reborn

Switzerland is blessed with many small villages and even more big mountains – but among its very finest character is Engelberg, aka Angel Mountain. This winter’s more compelling, with the relaunch of its 1904 Belle Epoque-era palace hotel. Now under the white-gloved guidance of one of our favorite hoteliers, the Kempinski Palace Engelberg is the first and only five-star hotel in town.
The charming village has been the home of Benedictine monks since the 12th century (Wordsworth immortalized the abbey in a poem and today its cheese-making tours are not to

be missed). More recently, Engelberg’s powder has been worshipped by the fat-ski-wearing Nordic community. Perched at the end of a long wide valley and crowned by the snow-sure Titlis Glacier, Engelberg’s powder possibilities are renowned. From its glitteringly accessible Laub face to its huge backcountry, the rewards of the Uri Alps are boundless. And now, as you Jay satisfied in the soothing waters of the Kempinski’s rooftop infinity pool, you might spot your own perfect tracks. Just over an hour from Zurich, Engel berg’s stars are aligning.

Meet at the Club?
Something of an institution for European family holidays, Club Med has made another foray into North American skiing territory. Perched just above the icy St Lawrence with ski-in, and ski-out access to Le Massif’s 53 scenic trails, the new Quebec resort will be the continent’s only Club Med dedicated to skiing. Aiming to win over North America’s skiers to the all-inclusive concept, one price delivers all the components of a jolly ski getaway: a ski pass for the only powder cast of the Rockies, group ski and snowboard lessons with certified instructors, and rather critically, all-day open bar and dining in five different restaurants. Arrive en family and take advantage of the complimentary children’s club for ages 4-17, as well as free activities such as yoga, hiking, and wellness. Right down to the wifi and the gratuities, the only thing left is to relax and make it back to the lodge in time for all-in apres cocktails with your G.O. Opening this December, this may be a club to consider.
