Some of the most powerful stories in the Roaring Fork Valley do not happen on the ski runs everyone already knows. They happen in a converted janitor’s closet turned nonprofit headquarters, on a stage at TACAW, and across the fairways of the Snowmass Club. That is the story of Challenge Aspen, and this summer it is inviting the community in.
Founded in 1995 and built on a chance meeting between a young guide and a blind skier navigating Ajax Mountain, Challenge Aspen has spent three decades proving that adaptive recreation belongs at the center of alpine culture, not the margins. Today the organization serves people with cognitive and physical disabilities year-round, from ski and snowboard instruction to summer camps in music, art, dance, and the outdoors. Its Challenge Aspen Military Opportunities program extends that same mission to veterans, offering a way back to nature and to one another.
This July and September, three events open a window into that work.
Music and Dance Camp Live Performance
Friday, July 10 at TACAW, Basalt
An original theater production where every performer takes the lead. Challenge Aspen’s music and dance campers spend the week building a show from scratch, and the result is a night of storytelling, movement, and unfiltered joy on one of the valley’s best stages. It is proof that creative expression has no asterisks.
Denim and Diamonds Gala
Friday, July 17 at Buttermilk Mountain Lodge, Aspen
The valley’s boots meet black tie for an evening built to fund what comes next. Every ticket, every raised paddle, goes directly toward adaptive recreation programs that hand back confidence and independence, one participant at a time. It is Challenge Aspen’s signature summer fundraiser, and it plays like one.
Golf Classic
Monday, September 14 at the Snowmass Club, Snowmass Village
A day of friendly competition with a purpose written into every swing. As summer gives way to fall in Snowmass, the Golf Classic closes the season’s calendar of giving, funding adaptive programs that carry Challenge Aspen’s mission into the next year on the mountain.
