Aspen’s Wheeler Opera House Wins National Historic Theatre Award

The Wheeler Opera House has received the 2026 Outstanding Historic Theatre Award from the League of Historic American Theatres (LHAT), a national honor recognizing excellence in preservation, programming, services, and community impact. The award was presented on July 12 during LHAT’s 50th National Conference & Theatre Tour in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Wheeler Opera House was recognized by the League not only for its commitment to preservation but also for the organization’s deep commitment to local engagement within a world-renowned destination.

Since its opening day in 1889, the Wheeler has served as a cultural gathering place for generations. The 1984 restoration did more than save a landmark; it restored a vital civic engine to the center of community life.  The theatre’s survival was made possible by community members who fought to preserve the building, valued cultural partners like the Aspen Music Festival & School, and by generations of Aspen voters who have continued to support vital and transformative funding for arts and culture.

In the decades since, it has remained in continuous operation, evolving to meet modern standards of safety, accessibility, and artistic excellence while retaining its historic character. Today, the Wheeler welcomes tens of thousands of guests annually for concerts, comedy, film, lectures, festivals, educational programming, and community events. Serving both residents and visitors, the venue continues to fulfill its mission as a gathering place for artistic expression, cultural exchange, and shared experiences.

“This is a theatre that could have easily been overshadowed by its famous ski resort,” commented Ken Stein, President and CEO of LHAT. “Instead, it remains a vital part of the city’s rich and storied culture.”

“This recognition is about much more than a historic building,” said Mike Harrington, the Wheeler’s Executive Director. “It reflects generations of residents, civic leaders, artists, staff, and supporters who believed the Wheeler mattered and ensured it would remain a place where community gathers, stories are shared, and culture helps define who we are. We often say we strive to be rooted locally yet recognized globally, and this award is a meaningful reflection of that aspiration.”

Harrington recognized the contributions of the entire Wheeler staff but called out longtime Wheeler employee Maria Machuca, the theatre’s lead maintenance technician. For 22 years, Machuca has helped care for the historic venue, ensuring the building remains safe, functional, and welcoming day after day, night after night. “The Wheeler would not be what it is today without Maria’s dedication,” Harrington said while accepting the award. “She represents the many behind-the-scenes individuals whose work helps activate this historic landmark and preserve it for future generations.”

The Outstanding Historic Theatre Award recognizes a theatre that demonstrates excellence through its community impact, quality of programs and services, and quality of the restoration or rehabilitation of its historic structure. Award-winning theatres demonstrate significant achievement, broad community service, and sustained impact over time. Only 21 other theatres have received this prestigious award, including New York City Center, the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, and the Fulton Opera House in Lancaster, PA, which was built in 1852. In 2025, the winner was the Florida Theatre in Jacksonville. Past LHAT award recipients are listed here.

About the League of Historic American Theatres

The League’s annual conference is the largest annual gathering of historic theatre professionals, community leaders, and service providers and suppliers, attracting participants from across the U.S., as well as Canada and the United Kingdom, for idea sharing and network building. Professionals, volunteers, and community leaders join together for four days of networking and peer information exchange, tools & techniques sessions, and tours of local historic theatres, plus events, banquets, and receptions. By defining the field, creating a shared vocabulary, and identifying best practices, the educational components of the League’s annual conference strengthen efforts to sustain historic theatres of various sizes, operating structures, and programming philosophies. During theatre tours, docents emphasize how each venue has dealt with the specific challenges of sustaining their operations to serve their communities, now and in the future. The conference takes place in different locations across North America each year.
