Zell am See – Kaprun, Austria is a hidden treasure, packed with surprises and winter adventure. Here’s our top 5 must do’s.

Kitzsteinhorn-Glacier

1. A snow-sure glacier.

High above the village of Kaprun, the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier sparkles snowy white, welcoming skiers and boarders from autumn well into summer. From smooth groomers to the Black Mamba, a 1km long groomed slope with a pitch of 63 degree steep, the Kitzsteinhorn is fun for all levels. There’s even a loopy, long superpipe with walls more than 6 metres high.

The-Tauern-Spa

2. The Tauern Spa.

Enter a warm world of soothing warmth surrounded by the water and saunas at the magnificent modern Tauern Spa. Opened just a few years ago, it’s a glassy universe of indoor and outdoor pools, saunas and quiet zones. Swim against a jet stream current, lounge in the relax-pool, and feel like you’re at sea in the high pool with waterfall and outdoor saltwater quiet pool. A trendy hotel is part of the complex, making this a one-stop address for alpine R+R.

Schmittenhöhe-hiking-winter

3. Take a run through the trees. Skis optional.

Our favorite? Winter hiking tour Number 28 on the Schmittenhöhe is loved by all types: snowshoes, touring skis or hiking boots alike. The scenic route leads from the Sonnkogel to the peak of the Schmittenhöhe, delivering stunning views onto the Großglockner and rewarding all comers with sun decks, music and drinks at the top.

Zell-am-See-Kaprun-lake

4. The lake.

For sultry skating, peaceful walking, exhilarating cross-country skiing or simply for admiring its silvery expanse through a window with a cup of something delicious in the hand, Lake Zell is among the prettiest in the Alps. So clean, it’s classified as drinking water.

zell-am-see-ski-hut

5. A little hut magic.

Keen for some quiet romance? Cap off a ski day in one of Zell’s charming, rustic ski huts. Tasty Austrian specialties like cheesy Kasnocken and hot Gluhwein go hand in hand with spectacular views and cozy wood-burning fires.
