Mikaela Shiffrin Cover Shoot – SNOW Magazine

The 2016-17 ski season in Colorado was a good one with plenty of snow and lots of sunny days. Aspen hosted World Cup finals and every day was glorious and warm. Mikaela Shiffrin won the Slalom globe as well as the overall World Cup title.  We spoke to her about doing a feature story with a high fashion photo shoot. We were entranced with the idea of shooting her as the snow princess. We assembled a team for the shoot which included top photographer Christian Alexander, Ernesto Sempoll on lighting, and the amazing John Martinez as the stylist. We put ... Read more

Collective Retreats – Luxury Camping

Collective Retreats – Luxury Camping. Luxury Camping or Glamping is the best new way to experience the outdoors. For those of you who see camping as fighting with large pieces of canvas and aluminum tent poles, this has got to be the best thing since flush toilets. Gone are the days of blowing up a mattress pad and unfurling a musty sleeping bag to “try” to get a few hours of rest on hard ground. Gone too are the days of lighting the Coleman stove to heat up your coffee in the am. Welcome to the gold standard of “Camping”, ... Read more

The Colorado Olympics that Weren’t

The Colorado Olympics that Weren’t How Colorado won, and lost, the 1976 winter Games — and why it matters today. By Cynthia Psarakis On Feb. 4 , 1976, an expectant crowd packed shoulder to shoulder into a chilly open-air stadium for the opening ceremony of the Xii Olympic Winter Games. Performers and dignitaries alike took the stage against a backdrop of majestic, snowy mountains, and runners clad in red and white sprinted up a long flight of stairs, touching torches to massive cauldrons and setting them ablaze with the Olympic flame. Country by country, athletes marched in the parade of ... Read more

Rails to Trails

Rails to Trails JASPER’S HISTORIC LODGE LINKS TRAIN AND TERRAIN FOR THE QUINTESSENTIAL WINTER VACATION BY HILARY NANGLE The last time I  rode the train to jasper, i was 11 years old, bouncing in my seat in anticipation of a summer family adventure. Decades later, with a lifetime of far-flung travel under my belt, I find that I’m once again that little girl, my nose pressed to glass, waiting for the Rockies to appear as a shadow on the horizon of the great plains. I am returning to the lakefront lodge of my childhood  memories — the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge — ... Read more

Top Luxury Hotel – Vail’s Hotel Sebastian

Top Luxury Hotel – Vail’s Hotel Sebastian – Winter Warmth In Vail, a boutique hotel embraces a culture of hospitality BY ROGER TOLL A strange thing happened each time I returned to the Sebastian on my last visit to Vail: I would aim for my room but would find myself instead on one of the lobby’s comfortable sofas, sipping from a warm mug of hot chocolate or a bottle of water brought by a thoughtful employee, and losing myself in yet another coffee table book full of spectacular photos of nature, art, or history. Sometimes the library just off the lobby ... Read more

The Escapist from Portico Club

I know I’m dating myself, but when I was little and someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, being an “Escapist” was not on the approved list. Was it something that “I dream of Jeannie” became when she crossed her arms and nodded her head? Deciding where to stay on your Alpine vacation is one of the most important decisions you will make once you decide where to go.
