Hotel Jerome – Aspen  – Victorian  Vistas. Historic is Hip at aspen’s revamped Hotel Jerome

By Cindy HirscHfeld

The Hotel Jerome doesn’t feel like a typical ski hotel, but it’s most definitely Aspen—the charming sophisticate with a rustic Western heritage. When the hotel first opened on Thanksgiving eve 1889, it offered then-novel amenities, including indoor plumbing, steam heat, and electricity, rivaling Europe’s most opulent lodges. Today the Jerome offers a similar level of luxury by modern standards, enhanced by a savvy remodel and a recent management takeover by Auberge Resorts.

The new décor reinterprets the hotel’s Victorian-era roots in a way that’s historically accurate while feeling fresh and up to date. Noted interior designer Todd-Avery Lenahan has livened up the once-staid interior with a dash of the eclectic—artwork with Hunter S. Thompson quotes encircling the frames, a collage of leather belts lining the elevator walls, a chandelier of vintage bottles in the J-Bar. Reviving a more recent tradition, Tony DiLucia, the Jerome’s former and much-beloved GM, is back at the helm, ensuring that service and operations are up to Auberge’s high standards. Thankfully, one thing remains constant: the Jerome is still exceptionally pet-friendly.

A welcome antidote to vanilla hotel style, the Jerome’s 94 spacious rooms are furnished with custom pieces that evoke a mashup of Victoriana and art deco—beds with corrugated leather headboards, leather-clad mini-fridges that resemble steamer trunks, and silver-plated ceiling lights, all set against a background of crisp houndstooth wallpaper and cashmere drapes. The Jerome’s most sought-after rooms are its three executive suites with their ultra-long chesterfield sofas in butterscotch hues, and wet bars chicly fronted with croc-patterned leather. Thoughtful touches in all rooms include custom-blend toiletries, plus a complimentary selection of snacks and agave-sweetened sodas. Decidedly non-Victorian: the in-room iPad loaded with hotel info and recommended local hot spots, plus postable e-postcards.
