Here is a sampling of the best spas – Megève, France — That famous French Village tucked beneath Mont Blanc, just a stone’s throw from Switzerland and Italy —practically defines chic. Jet-set skiers flock to its snowy slopes, snuggle up before roaring fires in luxuriously rustic chalets, roam designer boutiques in the medieval town center, and feast on cuisine that far transcends fondue. There’s so much to do that doing nothing — the essence of a relaxing vacation — sometimes gets neglected.

Of course, Megève’s spas offer pampering on par with the rest of its amenities, though two of the best properties take different approaches. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding mountains is the Pure Altitude Spa at Les Fermes de Marie, a sumptuously furnished, five-star hotel comprised of nine chalets arranged in a hamlet near the center of town. Treatments ranging from top-notch facials and aromatic body wraps to massages and detox programs showcase the spa’s own skincare line, which features edelweiss and other mountain-plant extracts. Among the therapeutic treatments designed to rejuvenate winter-ravaged skin is the Soin Grand Froid, an alternating hot and cold treatment that combines a glow-inducing facial with a foot-and- hand massage and wrap that’s as relaxing as it is restorative.

Throughout the nearly 4,000-square-foot spa, nods to the nearby natural elements abound. Rustic stone walls, gurgling water features, and rough-hewn wooden beams lend a distinctive, comforting sense of place. Guests can also enjoy the spas’ relaxation areas, sauna, hot tub, outdoor Swedish bath, indoor swimming pool, and fitness room. Each of the hotel’s private chalets has its own spa, so guests of these deluxe accommodations needn’t step outside to reap the benefits.

Taking a cue from farther afield is the Le Spa du Chalet du Mont d’Arbois, part of the five-star Chalet du Mont d’Arbois hotel located in a remote area of the mountain plateau. Though you wouldn’t know it from the traditional chalet exterior and alpine setting, the spa offers a global tour of decadent treatments.

The spa’s Couleurs du Monde (Colors of the World) body rituals feature exotic ingredients applied in the form of masks, wraps, and massages inspired by far-flung countries. The Coleur Soleil Indien, for example, combines a sugar exfoliation, mango wax, and Ayurvedic massage to nourish and hydrate skin while soothing body and mind. Head-to-toe Coleurs treatments inspired by the healing traditions of Japan, Africa, Bali, and beyond are also on offer, along with more conventional massages, facials, and other services.

Before and after treatments, guests can visit the Jacuzzi, hammam, fitness room, sauna, Swedish bath, and an indoor/outdoor swimming pool heated to a comfortable 82 degrees year-round. Floating there after temporary transport to a foreign land, it’s a pleasure to realize that your trip back to the real world will only be to the snow-capped peaks and towering pines of Megève.
