With 87 lifts and more than 300km of marked trails, The Arlberg is rightly famous for big mountain skiing — but where to start? Cover the bold and the beautiful terrain by following an itinerary. Among the world’s most famous ski circuits, The White Ring is a 22km long route that connects Lech, Zürs and fairytale hamlets of Zug and Oberlech. New this winter, the Run of Fame begins in Warth in the north and sashays via Lech to St Anton’s Rendl in the south, covering 65km and 18,000m vertical – a perfect use for the new Flex lift, which unites St Anton with Lech-Zuers to transform the Arlberg into Austria’s largest linked area.

Stretch out your ski legs on one of many groomed walking trails that dish up stunning scenery, soothing silence and very likely a cosy atmospheric hut where spicy goulash, schnitzel and frothy cold beer await. St Anton maintains around 70km of hiking paths, and there are 40km that snake round Lech-Zuers. Enough zen? You can always move the thrill needle hard to the right with a ride on a rodelbahn – toboganning turned extreme sport.

The Ski Museum in St Anton is indoor tour through the outdoor world of wintersports. It pays homage to local ski pioneers such as Hannes Schneider and modern heroes that include local champions Karl Schranz and Mario Matt. Don’t miss a chance to see the artistic compelling ski movies of the 1920s and 1930s. An ornately carved chalet that is a treasure-trove of alpine history.

Swaddle under a blanket of fur and lean back under a starry sky. A horse-drawn carriage ride over a snowy meadow from Lech to the tiny hamlet of Klosterle registers high on our romance Richter scale. An intimate candlelit dinner in a cosy wooden Walser Inn awaits.

Even if you’re not up for the steep descent down the Northside of Valluga, you can still ride up the slightly rickety five-person gondola for a satisfying selfie from its 360 degree panoramic perch. And if you are a strong off-piste skier – and you are accompanied by a qualified mountain guide – you’re well poised to tackle the highly exposed first turns that open onto heavenly powder fields all the way down to Zuers. A true classic.
